Book One.
Have sympathy with your fellow-countrymen.
Part I.
The weakness of our nation is due to our lack of mutual sympathy. There have been many instances of insults offered by foreigners to us Chinese, and it is justly that we are called shifting sands. When we kill a foreigner, compensation to the amount of thousands of dollars must be paid, but if a Chinese is
killed by a foreigner, no compensation whatever is exacted. This
is the result of our imprudence and cowardice, our weakness for
flattering foreigners and our failure to consult aught but self.
If our whole population of 400,000,000 were fervent with patriotism
what necessity would there be for us to fear for the future of our
nation ? Now however, we people have not yet attained the standard
of perfect civilisation, and it is not an uncommon case that we
commit such barbarous acts as to insult our own fellows. In the
villages there often take place clan-fights on account of trifling
disputes. Again the wealthy members of a village presume on their
power and position to insult the lower classes, the larger clans
maltreat the smaller ones, while the larger families abuse the smaller ones. Further members of the same family cherish hatred against one another over trifles; brothers of the same father but different mothers deceive one another, while the wife's sons maltreat those of the concubine. Besides this quarrel and disputes often arise between brothers of the same parents. Now all these evil practices should be given up, and all alike should have sympathy one with another.
Have sympathy with your fellow-countrymen.
Part 2.
How can our danger be removed? We must copy the example of the ant. They all cleave together and the stronger among them
